We’re all winding down to the end of 2007, and the gloom and doom of the economic news seems to be never-ending. With the housing market appearing to be to blame for the majority of our woes, it’s nice to hear about an activity or an event that can provide entertainment for families, friends, and neighbors - and if playing games together online isn’t enough of to create a Taster’s Choice moment, winning prizes might just be the icing that frosts your cake!

Vero Beach Business Directory and local area business owners in Indian River County are joining together to bring you the first annual Indian River County Online Scavenger Hunt. It kicks off December 15, and runs through December 21. Prizes (as of the time that this story was written) total just over $1,000.00, but that number is expected to increase after Thanksgiving.

Even though most people in Indian River County will be playing because of their innate desire to win a prize, the unseen value lies within the game: community members and businesses developing a more cohesive relationship through a modern frontier like the Internet.

With a typical scavenger hunt, the players are provided with a list of things they need to find and bring back physically, or in digital format (pictures). Scavenger hunts typically require the use of a vehicle, typically a car, in order to collect items and win prizes. However, online scavenger hunts vary at this key juncture. The use of fossil fules, aka gasoline, are not required, thereby saving the participant the unwanted burden of paying $3.15 per gallon for gas.

If saving gas was the only positive factor then most participants would gladly choose the original method of play. Instead, there is an added value of knowing that local businesses have contributed a prize to a contest that is hosted entirely by locals, and the methodology for playing the game requires the players to gain a better understanding about local businesses through interactive pages relating to them.

So the next time you think there’s nothing to do in Vero Beach or Indian River County without spending money on gasoline, remember to mark your calendar for the first annual Indian River County Online Scavenger Hunt. You’ll be glad you did!

When was the last time you looked forward to visiting your local pharmacy?

I can’t remember either until I started filling my prescriptions at Miller’s Health Mart Pharmacy in the 777 building on 37th Street.

Doug and Susan Miller, along with their professional staff, provide a warm, family-friendly enviroment, prompt service, and low prices that can rival the more commonly known chain stores.

Come see for yourself what it feels like to be taken care of by someone who knows your name and makes you feel welcome.

Vero Beach Massage Therapy Sessions: A History of Healing

November 6th, 2007 admin Posted in News No Comments »

Massage is one of the oldest healing arts, and the Vero Beach massage therapy professionals maintain the tradition passed down, according to Chinese records, more than 3,000 years; the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians applied forms of massage for many ailments; and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems.

Today, the benefits of massage are varied and far-reaching. As an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs, massage therapy has also proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including low back pain, arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, infertility, smoking cessation, depression, and more. And, as many millions will attest, massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living that can lead to disease and illness.

So What Is It Exactly?
Massage, bodywork and somatic therapies are defined as the application of various techniques to the muscular structure and soft tissues of the human body. Specifically:

Massage: The application of soft-tissue manipulation techniques to the body, generally intended to reduce stress and fatigue while improving circulation. The many variations of massage account for several different techniques.

Bodywork: Various forms of touch therapies that may use manipulation, movement, and/or repatterning to affect structural changes to the body.

Somatic: Meaning “of the body.” Many times this term is used to denote a body/mind or whole-body approach as distinguished from a physiology-only or environmental perspective.

There are more than 250 variations of massage, bodywork, and somatic therapies and many practitioners utilize multiple techniques. The application of these techniques may include, but not be limited to, stroking, kneading, tapping, compression, vibration, rocking, friction, and pressure to the muscular structure or soft tissues of the human body. This may also include non-forceful passive or active movement and/or application of techniques intended to affect the energetic systems of the body. The use of oils, lotions, and powders may also be included to reduce friction on the skin.

Please note: Massage, bodywork and somatic therapies specifically exclude diagnosis, prescription, manipulation or adjustments of the human skeletal structure, or any other service, procedure or therapy which requires a license to practice orthopedics, physical therapy, podiatry, chiropractic, osteopathy, psychotherapy, acupuncture, or any other profession or branch of medicine.

Will My Insurance Cover It?
The services of a bodywork professional may be covered by health insurance when prescribed by a chiropractor or osteopath. Therapies provided as part of a prescribed treatment by a physician or registered physical therapist are often covered.
