Liberty Medical, distributor bringing up to 870 jobs to St. Lucie
As companies across the Treasure Coast cut back, St. Lucie County economic development officials announced on Tuesday that up to 870 jobs are coming to Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce. About 800 of the jobs will be new hires for call-center positions with Liberty Medical Supply, in Port St. Lucie. Meanwhile, J.J. Taylor Companies, the second-largest beer distributor in the state, intends to move 70 positions from Stuart to Fort Pierce.

Shuttered R.J. Gator's restaurants will not reopen and 142 employees no longer have jobs, the result of a court ruling here Friday.

During a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Judge Paul Hyman granted a request by J.D. Restaurant Holdings to convert its Chapter 11 bankruptcy to a Chapter 7. The company, based in Palm Beach Gardens, filed for Chapter 11 in September and hoped to find a buyer for the popular chain.

Bank of America to lay off up to 35,000 over 3 years
Bank of America Corp. says it expects to eliminate 30,000 to 35,000 jobs over the next three years. Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America says it hasn't yet completed its analysis for eliminating positions, and a final number will not be determined until early next year. It said the cuts will affect workers from both companies and all types of businesses.

Piper temporarily closing plant in usual seasonal shutdown
Piper Aircraft Inc. will again temporarily shut down its manufacturing plant in Vero Beach during December. Piper spokesman Mark Miller said the plant usually closes during the holiday season.
